UVIC: With Proportional Representation, more women win elected political office.
Is that the real reason why BC’s power elite male vested interests oppose PropRep Referendum?
By Alfred Lambremont Webre, JD, MEd
VANCOUVER, BC – On October 30, 2018, in a UBC Panel facilitated by Michelle Eliot, award-winning journalist and host of CBC Radio’s midday call-in show, BC Today , Dr. Grace Lore, PhD, Adjunct Professor, University of Victoria Department of Political Science publicly shared her glass ceiling-shattering, data-based findings that:
“With Proportional Representation, a higher proportion of women win elected political office than under B.C.’s present system of first past the post [FPTP].”[1]

UVIC: With Proportional Representation, more women win elected political office.
Highest proportion of women candidates win political office under:
(1) Dual Member Proportional (DMP)
Prof. Grace Lore’s findings are definitive, research and data supported, and clearly articulated:
Of the three alternative Proportional Representation systems on offer to voters in the November 30, 2018 British Columbia Referendum[2], the:
(1) Dual Member Proportional (DMP) system, by available data, results in the highest reasonably expected proportion of women candidates elected to political office in any given election.
According to Prof. Grace Lore, adoption of either the remaining two alternative Proportional Representation systems, namely:
(2) Mixed Member Proportional (MMP), and
(3) Rural-Urban Proportional (RUP)
will result in:
- the election of a greater proportion of women candidates to elected political office than the current British Columbia FPTP voting system, and
- less than that resulting from (1) Dual Member Proportional (DMP) system.
Conclusion: The best way to achieve eventual gender parity in British Columbia’s elected political offices is for voters in the Nov. 30, 2018 to mark their Ballots as follows:
– Select a proportional representation voting system over the current Fiost Past the Post voting System; and
– Rank Dual Member Proportional (DMP) as their #1 preference
What is the real reason why BC’s power elite male vested interests oppose PropRep Referendum?
Available opposition research suggests that the true core behind the principal male-dominated plutocratic funders of opposition to the adoption of Proportional Representation in British Columbia lies in deep-seated gender power politics.
One source documents the barriers to entry into the political marketplace erected by a male-dominated wealth and power elite against facilitating gender equity between elected women and elected men in public decision-making that adoption of Proportional Representation would create.[3]
The source identifies the following male power elite opposition backers to gender equity in the British Columbia political marketplace:
Wealthy Elites are Funding the Opposition to BC’s Electoral Reform Referendum, New Filings Show
….
Mining tycoon Ross Beaty
Ross Beaty, a wealthy mining tycoon whose company was accused of scavenging off Iceland’s economic collapse after the firm bought up assets from a failing local hydro company, is also helping bankroll the ‘No’ campaign.
Beaty donated nearly $90,000 to the BC Liberals between 2010 and 2017, including a $5,000 donation to BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson’s leadership campaign.
Ironically, Beaty’s preferred BC Liberal leadership candidate would have lost the contest under the first-past-the-post system that he is now paying to support.
Venture capitalist Rob Hartvikson
Rob Hartvikson is a wealthy venture capitalist who got rich from heavily discounted stocks in the gold and diamond industries during the 1990s.
Hartvikson subsequently became tangled up in a conflict of interest scandal. In 2000, a commission found that Hartvikson and Blayne Johnson, a fellow Vancouver stockbroker, withheld information from their clients and made off with more than $5 million.
Hartvikson subsequently fled to Ireland in 2001 to avoid public attention.
Future Shop billionaire Hassan Khosrowshahi
Hassan Khosrowshahi, a Vancouver-based billionaire and founder of Future Shop, is a major BC Liberal donor and serves as a director for the right-wing Fraser Institute.
In 2015, Clark’s BC Liberal government sold Khosrowshahi 14 parcels of land in Coquitlam for a staggering $43 million below its appraised value. At the time, the NDP accused the BC Liberals of discounting the land as a personal favour to Khosrowshahi, whose company had donated nearly $1 million to the Liberals.
Corporate lobbyist Jess Ketchum
Jess Ketchum is president of Ketchum Communications, a lobbying firm whose clients have included the Council of Forest Industries and the British Columbia Lumber Trade Council
Prior to becoming a lobbyist, Ketchum was a well-known political operative and campaign manager for the right-wing BC Social Credit Party. He later worked as a BC Liberal advisor.
Who else? Other donors listed in the initial disclosure include:
- Peter Armstrong, former president of the Non Partisan Association, a right-wing municipal political party in Vancouver [notorious for their “repeal the empty house tax” party motto during the 2018 Vancouver, BC municipal election]
- George Affleck, an entrepreneur and NPA councillor
- Reid Carter, an asset manager and director of West Fraser Timber
- Mohan Jawl, a major developer in Victoria
- Peter Gustavson, CEO of Gustavson Capital Corp who sold his previous company for $370 million USD
- James Sutcliffe, a banking and financial services lawyer.
These donors aren’t the only ones bankrolling efforts to stop electoral reform.
Earlier this year, lumber magnate and long time BC Liberal donor Jim Shepherd was outed as the person behind a well-funded astroturf group that was bombarding British Columbians with attack ads and robocalls in advance of the official referendum campaign.
